Anti-Ageing Night Balm

Treat your skin with this nourishing face balm. It will moisturise and tone pores while treating and preventing wrinkles too. The base in this recipe is more expensive than my coconut oil moisturizer, but the results are worth it. Of course, you may rather choose to substitute the more affordable coconut oil as your base, but this cream is different. It’s luxurious, rejuvenating and makes a fantastic night cream.

Cost & Shelf Life

Cost Price: R54.77 per 100ml.
Lasted me about:
2 months (using every night).
Estimated shelf life: 6 months (if stored away from direct sunlight).

*Costs accurate at the time of writing this blog post.

CHALLENGE

Leaves an oily residue, which is another reason I have suggested using it as a night cream.

CHERRY ON TOP

  • You only need to use a pea-size amount to cover your entire face. In other words, this moisturizer goes far!
  • Cheaper to make than buying retail anti-ageing creams.

INGREDIENT BENEFITS

  • Jojoba oil: Has a similar structure to that of sebum, which allows it to absorb easily and readily into your skin. This makes it a gentle moisturizer for all skin types. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which helps keep breakouts at bay. (buy here).
  • Sweet almond oil: Has high vitamin E content, helps treat and prevent sun damage, evens out skin tone, improves complexion, helps lighten scars and age spots. (buy here)
  • Unrefined raw shea butter: Contains vitamins A and E as well as essential fatty acids, which help maintain skin’s elasticity and suppleness. It also helps rebuild and rejuvenate collagen. (buy here)
  • Vitamin E oil: Blocks free radical damage, boosts collagen production, speeds up cell regeneration. (buy here)
  • Anti-ageing essential oils: Neroli, Lavender, Rose, Geranium, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lemon, Carrot Seed. If you can only afford to buy one, I would recommend Neroli. (buy essential oils here)

  2. I am in Cape Town and have only just stumbled onto your blog. I’m loving it! I am in the process of starting my own business and would just like to know from you where the best and cheapest place is to purchase Bees Wax? I’ve been forced to leave my job to care for my mom and desperately need to earn a decent living without compromising on the quality of my products.
Any tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Samantha,
Thank you for your comment. I’m happy to hear that you are enjoying my blog and wanting to start your own natural business. The more, the merrier. I am sorry to hear about your circumstances though – I hope you are able to make a success of your business. To answer your question, as a business you would be able to buy bees wax at a better price through a wholesale supplier like Escentia. As an individual, the best price I’ve found is online at Fun with Soap. I’m not sure if you are set on making the products yourself? But if you are interested, Fun with Soap also offers to make/decant the product base for you and then you can simply brand it yourself and add your own fragrances. It may save you a lot of time and effort. Contact them for more information about this, and be sure to ask for the ingredients used in their bases if you are committed to making strictly natural products. Wishing you all the best 🙂

    • Hi Sandra,

Thank you for your question. Yes, frankincense would definitely work in this recipe. It’s a great choice, and a perfect substitute for an anti-ageing night cream.

      Kind regards

  3. Hi Christina I recently came upon your DIY anti ageing recipe and have since tried it. I ABSOLUTELY love it. I intend to sell this amazing cream but being a novice I am not sure how to price this. Would appreciate if you could tell me the weight of the finished cream and the cost of making the given recipe. Thank you.

    • Hi Christina,
Thank you for your positive comment. I am thrilled that you “absolutely love it” enough to sell it. That is fantastic and very encouraging to hear.
To answer your question, if you read this post again under the “cost and shelf life” section, you will see my breakdown of costs for 100ml of cream (I’m not sure about weight, you’ll have to weigh a batch you make). It cost me approximately R55 to make this buying the ingredients at a retail price. However, if you intend to sell this cream, it would be a good idea to find a business supplier of the ingredients at wholesale price. You need to determine how much it costs you to make this recipe when you buy everything you need, and then you need to decide on your own profit margin that will make it worthwhile for your efforts. I don’t sell my products for that very reason, I discovered that I would need a factory to pump out thousands of products in order to make a worthwhile profit that I could live on. I have no interest in factory production and increasing packaging waste, so I happily leave the heavy-lifting for others 😉

Good luck with your business venture. I wish you much success! Hopefully more people will love the product as much as you love it. Let me know how it goes.

      Best wishes,
      Christina

  5. Wow, this is the best Diy anti-aging balm I have ever seen. Such goodies are really very beneficial to the skin.

But why don’t you didn’t you add rosehip oil into the combination?

Because rosehip oil because it Contains vitamin A and C.

I love this two ingredients because I have been using vitamin C+Tretinion for quite a long time now, (though I use the differently) and I can testify how this stuff works.

I’ll glad to share my Anti-aging skincare recipe and how I use them.

  7. Thanks! I have everything except bees wax. Do you have any other suggestions besides the one you listed? What does the bees wax do? Thank you, Mary

    • Hello Mary. You can use other waxes or cetearyl alcohol for a similar texture. You can also use an incredibly hard butter like cocoa butter, but that won’t work as well as bees wax. The beeswax simply hardens everything together to form the balm texture. That is it’s main function here. You can leave out the bees wax entirely if you are happy with a thinner product – like a salve texture. Cosmetically, bees wax also forms a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture, and unrefined bees wax contains nutrients.
